That I did not see anyone else in reviews point this out is weird to me. Up to the point the baby’s mother was revealed I was still into the mystery, but these just completely threw me out of it. Even if they for some unfathomable reason did not do an autopsy, don’t tell me the detectives in charge were too dumb or lazy to look through the nurse’s office where the baby was found?! Like, the folder with baby’s info was in an unlocked, top drawer.

So the whole “whose baby was it” is completely pointless. Don’t tell me they didn’t do an autopsy for Birgitta? Any autopsy would’ve shown that she just gave birth (on my doctor friend’s authority). And here it’s either the biggest plot hole of the book, or the cops were just utterly incompetent. Besides the mystery of what happened to the villagers, another unknown was who gave birth to the child the cops found. While the plot was predictable I didn’t mind it much.
